Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) lets you demonstrate that existing competency without sitting through training you don't need.

What Is RPL?

RPL is an assessment process that evaluates your existing skills and knowledge against the competency standards of a qualification. If you can demonstrate you already meet the requirements through your work experience, you can be granted credit — or in some cases, the entire qualification — without completing the full course.

For tilers, this is particularly valuable. Many experienced tilers have extensive practical skills that easily meet the competency standards of the CPC31320 but have never had those skills formally recognised in Australia.

What Evidence Do I Need?

Strong RPL evidence includes employment records showing your tiling work history, payslips or tax returns showing trade employment, references from employers or supervisors, photos or videos of your completed work, site induction records, and any prior training certificates or licences from Australia or overseas.

RPL and the TRA Skills Assessment

If your goal is a TRA skills assessment through the Job Ready Program, RPL is not the right route. TRA does not accept units gained through RPL, or credit transfer based on RPL, when it assesses a qualification for the Provisional Skills Assessment, which is required before the Job Ready Program. A CPC31320 gained through RPL is a valid qualification for work and licensing, but it will not support a JRP application. Check TRA’s requirements, and speak to a registered migration agent about visas, before you choose RPL.
